NSFOCUS Showcases Two Groundbreaking Topics at SAS 2024: An In-Depth Analysis of the DarkCasino APT Group and the Evolution of New Botnets.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., October 30, 2024 – The 17th Security Analyst Summit (SAS), a premier global event focused on cybersecurity, recently concluded in Bali, Indonesia, where NSFOCUS was invited to participate.

As the premier gathering in cybersecurity, SAS brings together top security analysts, law enforcement agencies, CERTs, and industry leaders worldwide to discuss critical trends and opportunities in advanced threat detection, APTs, botnets, malware, and vulnerability exploitation.

At the summit, NSFOCUS Security Labs presented two major topics that garnered significant attention and discussion among attendees, showcasing the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation and APT research:

  • DarkCasino APT Attack Hunting and Analysis
  • The Invisible Blade in the Age of the Internet of Everything: IoT Botnets in the Service of APT

Topic 1: DarkCasino APT Attack Hunting and Analysis

This presentation highlighted the APT group DarkCasino, discovered and named by NSFOCUS Security Labs, along with its recent attack incidents. It detailed two zero-day vulnerabilities, CVE-2023-38831 and CVE-2024-21412, first seen in DarkCasino APT attacks. The session advocated for a clear distinction between economically and politically motivated APT groups, emphasizing the equal threat they pose and calling for a united front among security researchers to combat such APT threats.

Topic 2:  The Invisible Blade in the Age of the Internet of Everything: IoT Botnets in the Service of APT

This presentation explored, for the first time at an international conference, the relationship between botnets and APT groups, shedding light on their evolving dynamics. As the Internet of Things (IoT) becomes more pervasive, botnets are undergoing a transformative shift—from blunt DDoS attacks and cryptocurrency mining to sophisticated espionage tools, making them a preferred avenue for APT organizations. NSFOCUS experts called for heightened awareness regarding ubiquitous IoT devices to prevent their exploitation in APT attacks.

Through these two discussions, NSFOCUS’s research capabilities in APTs received international recognition, reaffirming the company’s position at the forefront of technological advancement. These findings not only highlight NSFOCUS’s expertise and foresight in APT research but also reflect its substantial contributions to the global cybersecurity landscape.

APT attacks remain one of the most complex and enduring challenges in cybersecurity today, posing long-term risks that could be difficult to eradicate. In response to this threat, organizations like government agencies and large enterprises must implement effective protective measures and actively build robust defense systems.

Moving forward, NSFOCUS is committed to deepening its research on APT attacks, continuously enhancing detection and defense capabilities to provide clients with stronger security assurances.
