Drupal Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2019-6340) Threat Alert

March 2, 2019 | Adeline Zhang

Overview

Drupal released a security advisory, announcing remediation of a highly critical remote code execution vulnerability (CVE-2019-6430), which stems from some field types improperly sanitizing data from non-form sources, leading to potential execution of arbitrary PHP code.

Conditions for Exploiting the Vulnerability

A site is affected by the vulnerability if either of the following conditions is met:

  • The site has the Drupal 8 core RESTful Web Services (rest) module enabled and allows PATCH or POST requests, or
  • The site has another web services module enabled, such as JSON:API in Drupal 8, or Services or RESTful Web Services in Drupal 7.

Affected Versions

  • Drupal 8.6.x < 8.6.10
  • Drupal 8.5.x (or earlier) < 8.5.11

Note: Drupal versions earlier than 8.5.x are end-of-life and do not receive security coverage.

Unaffected Versions

  • Drupal 8.6.10
  • Drupal 8.5.11

Solution

Drupal has released updates to fix this vulnerability. Users of the affected versions are advised to upgrade as soon as possible.

Users who cannot perform the upgrade for the time being can adopt the following measures for temporary protection:

Disable all web services modules, or configure the web server to not allow PUT/PATCH/POST requests to web services resources.

Note that web services resources may be available on multiple paths, depending on the configuration of users’ web servers.  For Drupal 7, such resources are typically available via paths (clean URLs) and via arguments to the “q” query parameter.  For Drupal 8, paths may still function when prefixed with index.php/.
