AVEVA InduSoft Web Studio and InTouch Edge HMI Critical Vulnerabilities Threat Alert

Overview

Recently, AVEVA released a security bulletin to announce the remediation of two critical vulnerabilities in industrial software.

CVE-2018-17916 is a stack overflow vulnerability that can be triggered by sending a crafted packet, leading to remote code execution by an unauthorized user.

CVE-2018-17914 stems from an empty password in the configuration file. An unauthorized attacker could exploit this vulnerability to remotely execute code with the same privilege as that of the affected software.

Both vulnerabilities receive a CVSS 3.0 base score of 9.8.

  • InduSoft Web Studio versions <=  1 SP2, and
  • InTouch Edge HMI (formerly InTouch Machine Edition) versions <=  2017 SP2

Unaffected Versions

  • InduSoft Web Studio 8.1 SP2, and
  • InTouch Edge HMI (formerly InTouch Machine Edition) 2017 SP2

Solution

AVEVA has released new versions to fix the preceding vulnerabilities. Affected users should download these updates from the following links as soon as possible to protect themselves:
