Recently, a security expert from IBM X-Force discovered a remote code execution vulnerability (CVE-2019-7406) in multiple models of TP-Link Wi-Fi extenders. This vulnerability can be exploited by unauthenticated, remote attackers by sending a malformed HTTP request so as to execute arbitrary shell commands on a target Wi-Fi extender. The attack does not require escalation of privileges as all processes on the vulnerable devices already run with root privileges.
The models of TP-Link Wi-Fi extenders affected by this vulnerability include RE365, RE650, RE350, and RE500.
Affected Models and Versions
- TP-Link Wi-Fi extenders RE365 (EU) before V1_190528
- TP-Link Wi-Fi extenders RE650 (EU) before V1_190521
- TP-Link Wi-Fi extenders RE350 (EU) before V1_190516
- TP-Link Wi-Fi extenders RE500 (EU) before V1_190521
Unaffected Models and Versions
- TP-Link Wi-Fi extenders RE365(EU)_V1_190528
- TP-Link Wi-Fi extenders RE650(EU)_V1_190521
- TP-Link Wi-Fi extenders RE350(EU)_V1_190516
- TP-Link Wi-Fi extenders RE500(EU)_V1_190521
TP-Link has released security patches to address this vulnerability and has published separate updates for each of the affected models of Wi-Fi extenders. Users who are affected by this vulnerability should upgrade their devices as soon as possible.
