Samba Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2021-44142)

Samba Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2021-44142)

fevereiro 14, 2022 | Jie Ji

Recently, NSFOCUS CERT detected a Samba remote code execution vulnerability (CVE-2021-44142) disclosed online. Because the default configuration of Samba’s vfs_fruit module allows out-of-bounds heap read and write through extended file attributes. When smbd parses EA metadata, a remote attacker (guest account or unauthorized user) with write access to the file’s extended attributes can execute arbitrary code with smbd’s privileges (usually root). At present, an analysis article of this vulnerability has been published, and relevant users are requested to take measures to protect it as soon as possible.

Samba is a free software that implements the SMB protocol on Linux and UNIX systems, and consists of server and client programs. The fruit modules that ship with Samba are designed to provide interoperability between Samba and Netatalk.

Temporary mitigation

If the relevant users are temporarily unable to perform the upgrade operation, the following measures can be used for temporary relief:

Remove the “fruit” VFS module from “vfs objects” in the Samba configuration file smb.conf.

Note: Changing the VFS module setting fruit:metadata or fruit:resource may cause all storage information to become inaccessible, such as the loss of information that makes it visible to macOS users.
