Advisory: Apache Flink Remote Code Execution Vulnerability

Overview

Recently, a security researcher announced a remote code execution vulnerability in Apache Flink Dashboard. The vulnerability does not require an attacker to authenticate, and a malicious Jar package can be uploaded via the dashboard to execute the code remotely. NSFOCUS researchers also made a successful re-enactment through research, confirming that they can attack the latest version of Flink.

Affected Products and Versions

The specific versions affected are unknown yet. The following version is affected after testing:

  • Apache Flink 1.9.1 (latest version)

Solution

The Apache Flink l has not released a patch to fix the vulnerability. Please keep close attention to the release at:

https://flink.apache.org/downloads.html

At the same time, users can take the following security practices for protection:

  1. Do not expose the Flink cluster being used onto the public network;
  2. Configure Flink whitelist for access control;.
  3. It is forbidden to access traffic of the public network for port 8081 (FLink default port); Disable 8081 port (default port for Flink) access from the public network
  4. Add security authentication policies;
